HARMONIELEHRE

A photo of the Harmoielehre, a self-built microtonal organ

Harmonielehre is an acoustic caleidoscope. It generates microtonal harmonies and transitions. By use of a crank, the length of up to twelve organ pipes are cyclically modified. The ambitus of each pipe can be adjusted within certain limitations, and through use of a gear unit with exchangeable cogwheels, the speeds with which the different pipes change have integer proportions towards each other. Harmonielehre can be a concert performance with four people (and no electricity!) in action, and it can just as well be an autonomous, permanently changing sound installation.

Here an excerpt of a recording of the instrument:

The whole recording (digital and →CD) on →bandcamp, the CD can also be ordered at →nurnichtnur.

You find a 10 minute video which shows how the instrument works →here on vimeo.

Below some more images of the work: a presentation at Château Moncley, and a closer look at a single pipe.
