FIVE SHIPS

An image of the five hurdy gurdy sculptures hanging from the ceiling.

Five self-designed instruments create a slowly and microtonally constantly changing sound space. Each instrument has two strings which are set in vibration by a friction wheel and produce sounds rich in overtones. A motorized mechanism shortens and lengthens the strings and thus permanently modulates the pitches. The work is a collaboration with the artist →Tina Tonagel.

Here an example of how it sounds:

You find a 2 minute video which shows how the instruments work →here on vimeo.

There is also a version with five musicians playing bowed instruments along with the five ships, we call this "Five Ships and Five Captains" →Here a video of a performance at Kunststation St. Peter, Cologne, as part of an evening around the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, supported by the →A und A Kulturstiftung, with Harald Kimmig & Simon Rummel: violin, Christiane Veltman: viola, Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg: viola d'amore, Constantin Herzog: double-bass.

Below some more photos of the work hanging in Kunststation St. Peter, Cologne.
